MUSIC: Janelle Monae
Two nights ago, I went to see Janelle Monáe perform her latest album, The ArchAndroid. Not only does this girl have an amazing voice, but she’s got mooooooves! She really knows how to put on a great show. I took lots of video, but unfortunately the heavy-thumpin’ bass ruined the sound. I guess my little Flip can’t handle the beat!
Originally from Kansas City, then Atlanta, Monáe has a distinct voice and style, both of which are reminiscent of a time when recording artists actually had to have talent. (I’m talking to you Ke:(ha.) You can’t help but smile (and dance) when you watch her perform. She’s a true talent.
You can buy The ArchAndroid here. But, don’t even try to step to me and MattB about doing the Tightrope...unless you wanna get suuurved!
MUSIC: Major Lazer/M.I.A./Busy Signal
Here’s a couple new songs that just came on my radar. I’m not familiar with Busy Signal, but according to The Fader, he’s quite the Jamaican hot shot. Major Lazer and M.I.A. on the other hand are two of my all-time favorite recording artists. The fact that they’ve collaborated with Busy Signal is a thumbs up to me.
MUSIC: Smashing Pumpkins
New month = new music! Well...not really new. Vintage, actually. I’ve been on a Smashing Pumpkins kick ever since Jessica Simpson did her damndest to make Billy Corgan relevant again. Just seeing his middle-aged mug reminded me of how much I love them. Siamese Dream was the first CD I ever bought! Enjoy the tunes!
MUSIC: The Gossip and Beth Ditto
I’ve been hearing about Beth Ditto for a while. And to be honest, until today I just knew her as that big girl who supposedly has a great voice. But, I’m an idiot. Beth Ditto is amazing.
Row Row Row Your Boat
Brannon plays the guitar as we sing a round of Row Row Row Your Boat together. He's a musical genius!
MUSIC: Classics Revival
While in college, I fell in love with older genres of music: 60’s/70’s Folk Rock, Classic Rock, Old School Country (Johnny Cash/Hank Williams Sr.). So, as much as I love me some Lady GaGa, I’ve always felt that I was born in the wrong era in terms of music...and wardrobe.
MUSIC: Ray Charles
As much as I love new music, there’s something special when you find an older artist that you fall in love with. Today, it’s Ray Charles. Despite his difficult upbringing, and struggles with drug abuse, the man’s musical talent is undeniable. Please enjoy a few of my favorites below.
A few more good ones: I Can’t Stop Loving You, What’d I Say, You Don’t Know Me
